Guest Post: Why we've preferred our Disney cruises over the other guys

We were fortunate enough to have cruised aboard the Disney Dream this past May and aboard the Disney Fantasy this past September. Previously, we had cruised on Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). Our favourite experience? Our Disney cruises... By far.

Our cruise on the Dream was the first cruise we had been on that actually felt like a family vacation. On our NCL cruise, for example, we felt very much in the minority having a child with us. On Disney Cruise Line (DCL), as like in Walt Disney World, we felt completely comfortable and at ease having a toddler and pre-schooler with us.

Everything onboard is constructed and organized for a family with children in mind. We can look at the stateroom itself for our first example. From the larger staterooms, to the bath tub in the stateroom bathroom, to the diaper genie in our room, we knew this was a place our children (and we, their parents) could feel at home.

Next, the pool/water areas are amazing. Despite the public health mandate that diapered children cannot be in the pool, Disney thought of everything for their younger guests. Both of my children loved Nemo's Reef (found on both the Dream and the Fantasy). It is a wonderful splash pad area themed after the Pixar favourite, Finding Nemo. For the older children, there is the Mickey pool (shallow), the Donald pool (deeper), Mickey's water slide, the Aqua Lab (on the Fantasy), and who could forget the water coaster, The Aqua Duck.

While all cruise lines offer formal nights in their dining rooms to allow guests to dress up and enjoy premium meals including lobster tails, DCL goes one better and also includes a pirate night. While formal nights appeal mainly to the adults, pirate night gives the young and the young at heart a chance to dress up in costume and enjoy pirate-themed menus and entertainment.

This brings me to the fact that DCL offers the only fireworks at sea. On pirate night, not only are the guests treated to Mickey's Pirates In The Caribbean show out on the pool deck, but this show is then followed by the Buccaneer Bash and fireworks. It is really a spectacular night.

All of the entertainment we saw on the Dream and Fantasy were top-notch. The shows are all directly or loosely based on Disney stories, perfect for Disney fans like us. What was really special, though, was the fact that all of us (parents and children) could enjoy the shows together. They enjoyed seeing some of their favourite stories and characters come to life, and we enjoyed watching the talent and special effects on stage.

Although we've enjoyed the food on all of our cruises, we really enjoyed the rotational dining that DCL offers. Switching dining rooms each night while retaining the same servers is a unique experience. The servers were truly the best we've ever encountered. They made the effort to entertain the children at meal times, and tried to diffuse situations (read: tantrums) when they were getting tense. They helped be that extra set of hands that we sometimes needed, like cutting up my son's food for us!

The restaurants on the Dream and Fantasy are experiences all on their own! The Enchanted Garden which, during the course of the evening, changes from dusk to moonlight, is a beautiful sight. The Royal Palace (Dream) or The Royal Court (Fantasy) is definitely the most elegant restaurant and certainly makes you feel like royalty. It is themed after the Disney princesses and the chandeliers in each restaurant are not to be missed. Last, but not least, is Animator's Palate. This was our favourite restaurant, although they were different in each ship. On the Dream, the big "show" in Animator's Palate is the Crush show. It is similar to "Turtle Talk" at Epcot. Crush swims through the restaurant stopping to talk to guests along the way. On the Fantasy, guests are asked to draw a person on their placemat prior to dinner. Throughout the evening, different scenes involving food from Disney movies are shown on the screens. Finally, to conclude, our drawings come to life on the big screen. If you're lucky, they may even be shown along some Disney stars in the movies! It is really something to see!

Lastly, Castaway Cay was definitely a highlight of both cruises. There is something there for everyone! For those wishing to relax: beautiful turquoise water, soft sand, an abundance of palm trees, but also varied activities for the more active folk. Rent a bike and ride around the island, or take the kids to Pelican Point and enjoy the water slides! Enjoy the sting ray encounter, or Spring A Leak water play area. Don't forget to do the Castaway Cay 5km run before  everyone even gets off the ship!

We have heard only good things about the Oceaneer's Club and Oceaneer's Lab, however, we did not use these children's areas on our cruises. Our next cruise is scheduled for April 2013 and we intend to take full advantage of these clubs at that time. A report will most likely follow that cruise!

While this article was made to be a review of our experience, and not an in depth analysis of any particular area of the cruise, I would be happy to go into more detail of any part of our cruise. Please leave your request in the comments and check back, because it may be featured in an upcoming article about DCL cruises.

Photo Flashback - Castaway Cay with DVC

Disney Vacation Club is fantastic. One of the vacations we have taken (OK it's actually been two) with DVC points has been on the Disney Cruise Line. DCL cruises always include a stop at Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. Disney is the only cruise line that has a private island with a deep water port. The ship actually docks at Castaway Cay and you walk onto the dock.... no taking a tender in here. On the new Disney Dream the 5 day cruise actually stops at Castaway Cay TWICE.

Guest Post: Disney Dream Christening Cruise 2011

I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the Disney Cruise Line Disney Dream Christening Cruise from January 19th through January 21st, 2011. Disney knows how to throw a party and this was a pretty amazing celebration. There was a live show Wednesday morning and then we were able to board the Dream. The Dream was in a word---spectacular! I sailed on the Disney Wonder in the Spring of 2010 and it was so much fun but the Dream was, well, awesome to say the least. I was on deck 10 in a deluxe family stateroom with a verandah and it was beautiful. The red pillow that is on the bed is so nice and comfortable I wished DCL was selling it because I would have bought one! Here are some pictures of the stateroom:

I had the chance to dine at the following restaurants and all the food was excellent. The service everywhere we went was top notch.  DCL really does have some amazing cast members on board.

The Royal Palace for dinner was excellent. The food was delicious and the service was wonderful. The atmosphere was elegant and I loved all the details that were on the floors, walls, and the glass slippers around the lighting in the center of the room.

I had the lobster and shrimp for my appetizer and the chicken salad for the main course. Both were excellent and since I wasn’t feeling full I had the strawberry shortcake for dessert. All the food was delicious!

I had breakfast at the Enchanted Garden and it was tasty. It was a buffet and the service was great. The themeing is quite lovely here and the colors were soft greens and pale pinks, very relaxing. Here is the seating area right next to the Enchanted Garden:

Animator's Palate is where you will find Crush and he interacts with you while you eat. The good was great and so was the service. I had a slice of pizza one night from Flo’s Café and it was very good.  The Cove Café coffee bar has a great selection to choose from and coffee was excellent.

We ate at Cabanas when we boarded the Dream and also the morning that we arrived back at Port Canaveral. We toured the clubs, saw the shows, and did some shopping while on board. I had chance to meet up with some fellow Disney travel agents I have become very good friends with but had not had the chance to meet in person so that was wonderful.

Castaway Cay was fabulous as usual; it really is a spectacular place and one of my favorite parts of sailing on the Disney Cruise Line. The Aqua Duck was wet, fast, and fun! The line was long but fun was had by all.

I am sure you can guess where this was?

For more pictures of the stateroom, dining, Castaway Cay, the Pirate Party, and the Dream in general please check out the TWTM blog and Magic Chat Live. I have already posted a ton of pics on the Travel with the Magic facebook page and will be sending more to Amy as well.

Team Post: Why would you recommend a Disney cruise?

Amy: My husband and I cruised on the Disney Wonder for our honeymoon. It was a three night cruise that left from Port Canaveral and stopped in Nassau and Castaway Cay. I’ve been on four different cruises with four different cruise lines and Disney Cruise Line (DCL) was clearly superior. The ship was beautiful. We were greeted with Chihuly glass flowers covering the ceiling in the main hall. The staterooms were larger than other ships and well-appointed. It’s a higher priced cruise so those things should be nice. However, there are three main reasons why I would recommend DCL.

At the end of dinner at Paulo. Get the
chocolate soufflé!
1. Great for kids or also great for avoiding kids
If you want to take your whole family on a cruise, Disney has wonderful programs for children. They have special areas of the ship designated for kids and teens. Cast Members lead children in all sorts of activities. This is also one of the reasons why DCL is great for adults who are not traveling with children. Since our cruise experience was for our honeymoon, we weren’t interested in dealing with anyone else’s children. There are separate pools for kids, families, and adults only. Disney’s private island also has a dedicated adults-only private beach so you can relax and listen to the waves in peace. Paulo is a wonderful adults-only fine dining restaurant onboard ship that is not to be missed. The next time we travel on a Disney cruise it will be with Tink and we’ll play on the family beach and in the family pool and let her play in the kids zones. Other than Paulo, the ship’s restaurants are family friendly. Our table mates included one little boy but we didn’t see him until breakfast on the last morning. He was having so much fun in the kids club that he ate meals there and not with his parents.

2. Stage shows
DCL features Broadway-caliber stage productions during each night of your voyage. The theatre takes the space that other cruise lines use for a casino. (Gambling’s not my style so I didn’t miss the casino at all. I don’t mind spending money, but I can’t handle losing money.) We had the late dinner seating so we went to the early show. While onboard, we saw Hercules, The Golden Mickeys, and a show I believe was called Disney Dreams. We thoroughly enjoyed the stage shows but if you prefer, there are plenty of other things to do during the performances.

3. Castaway Cay

I loved Castaway Cay. This is Disney’s private island. The ship docks at the island, eliminating the need for tendering to shore. You step right off the ship onto solid ground. The family and teen beaches offer water sports, playgrounds, bike rentals, and lots of lounge chairs. If you are traveling with teens, they can hang out in their own supervised part of the beach for a little controlled freedom. Lunch is served on the island and of course, there is a gift shop or two. Andy and I hopped on the tram to the other side of the island and the glorious adult beach. Ahhhhh! This area is quiet and peaceful. The April water was too cold for more than one quick dip and we managed to badly sunburn our legs and I still remember this as a fabulous place. There are paths for walking and biking and cabanas for beach-side massage and other spa treatments. One of the highlights of Castaway Cay for Andy was lunch. Our server on the ship had told us there was a surprise. At the adult beach, we had steak, lobster, and salmon grilled fresh there right off the water.

DisneyDad: If you have ever wanted to go on a cruise, consider Disney Cruise Line. I have been on 7 different cruises over the years. You can find cheaper cruises, but you’ll not fine a better cruise line for the price. “I don’t have any children to take on a cruise” you might think. Ok, borrow some if you think you need kids on a Disney cruise. The truth is adults can have fun on a Disney cruise without kids. My wife and I have been on DCL twice without kids and have thoroughly enjoyed both cruises.
If you need a casino to have fun at sea, DCL is not for you as they do not have one. What they do have is some of the best entertainment at sea. Their stage productions are second to none. While you don’t need to have kids to enjoy the cruise, it does help to “like” Disney as many of their stage productions have a Disney theme. Unlike other cruise lines, Disney also shows first run movies from the Disney studios in their 1000 seat widescreen theater. The same day a movie premiers at theaters, it will premier on board.

While on board, you don’t have to see kids. We actually went hunting for kids just so we could see the children's areas on board ship. While kids and children areas are abundant on board so are the adult areas. There are plenty of adult lounges on board. There is an adult-only pool on board, and on Disney’s private island, Castaway Key, there is even an adult-only beach.

The crew is courteous and efficient. Our cabin stewards have been efficient and unobtrusive. The dining staff are helpful and become part of the entertainment on some nights. Food is, of course, plentiful and delicious whether you choose to eat in a dining room or at a buffet. Disney has the most efficient disembarkation process of any cruise line we have been on. You simply go to breakfast and wander off the ship when you have finished. The Cruise Director guaranteed we could find our luggage within 30 seconds. We spotted ours in less than 10 seconds before we even got off the escalator going down to the luggage at Port Canaveral.

Cruises leave from central Florida at DCL cruise terminal at Port Canaveral.

DCL currently has 2 ships, The Disney Magic and The Disney Wonder. Early 2011 The Disney Dream will join their fleet and will begin cruises from Port Canaveral. The Disney Wonder will begin sailing from Los Angeles for Alaskan and Mexican Rivera cruises. The Disney Magic also does seasonal European cruises.

Photo Flashback! Castaway Cay

The adults only quiet beach on Disney's private island, Castaway Cay.  Happy Wednesday!
Is it just me or was Mickey in the clouds?
I knew Disney Cruise Lines was great, but wow!
